We all need an escape; I guess that’s one way to describe why I majored in art illustration. My art is a way for me to escape reality and to express myself.
Watercolor, ink, and with the help of technology today are the tools that I use to bring my visions to life. I try to incorporate more and more watercolor into my work. By using watercolor, one never knows what to expect on how the two colors are going to run with each other when they hit the water on paper; it’s always going to be an adventure and a surprise. Where as, ink defines and brings out the unique lining of every figure or object, most of the time both. However, the computer has and always will be part of my life no matter where I go or do. It is a major part the future of art and where it is going.
Life is my element of design. Life is like a rollercoaster of emotions. One minute you’re on top of the world, but by the end of the day you could be down and stressed out of your mind. If you really look closely at my work, you can see just how I used the lines, how thick they are or how loose. These are clues to how I was feeling that day. One could also look at the shading techniques I incorporated or the choice of color. That’s why I enjoy art so much; it’s like a diary. Instead of writing words, I’m drawing out a visual to see. The allure of the image is out there and the meaning behind it can be interpreted in various different ways. To an extent, art is a mystery to the viewer; the artist only knows the true meaning.
My influences can come from anywhere. Quotes, music, and people that are in my life are my main drives.
Growing up, my grandfather’s paintings were my influence. Running my fingertips with his brush strokes was my favorite thing to do. Landscapes, especially the watercolor painting of the beach, were my favorites. It made me want to go to a beach, to see what he had seen. I wanted to see the same beauty and calmness.
The ultimate accolade for my work and me is to be able to have people look at my art and have something to say, to have some sort of reaction. To have that child within each person that is tightly tucked and hidden away to come out and smile.
Even though art is a life-long learned talent, I’m ready to take that challenge for the rest of my life. I’m committed to my vision.
